Então, 2009, como correu? Podem nos dizer alguns dos pontos altos para vocês dois e para o M.A.N.D.Y. neste ano?
Ele correu em inúmeras direções. Um ano muito agitado e empolgante. Por vezes difícil, já que a indústria da música sofre muito e é duro manter o selo, mas estamos otimistas como sempre em que sobreviveremos a estes tempos difíceis. Patrick e eu viajamos pelo mundo dez vezes ida e volta e ainda nos deleitamos com isso. Além de sempre encontrar novas pessoas interessantes que fazem nosso trabalho valer a pena.
Contudo, devido à crise, foi um ano mais complicado para nós, DJs. Menos dinheiro no circuito como um todo, mas isto faz você refletir novamente, assim penso que foi um ano importante para muitas pessoas.
Como e quando este mix foi gravado?
O mix foi gravado no Watergate, durante nossa festa de Lançamento da Compilação de Sétimo Aniversário em Berlim, no mês de Setembro. Àquela época, estávamos terminando toda a promoção e o projeto para aquela coletânea e estávamos trabalhando em outra… outro projeto que exigiu muita energia de nós, mas com o qual, ao fim, estávamos todos muito contentes. Mesmo que estivéssemos quase que completamente acabados após um período como esse. Mas esta noite no Watergate foi um tão divertida como as que sempre temos naquele club.
Obviamente vocês tocam bastante. Houve algo específico a respeito deste mix que faz dele mais especial que os outros?
Já que nos dedicamos tanto a este mix, estávamos muito confiantes que nossos DJ mixes são diferentes dos que normalmente encontramos por aí. Nós ponderamos sobre cada faixa a ser inserida e apenas aquelas que possuem um efeito duradouro ou não cansam facilmente entram. Toda nossa energia é devotada ao mix, portanto eu penso sim que nossos mixes (sejam eles DJ mixes ou mixes para compilações) são bastante especiais. Eu toquei um dos que fizemos para uma coletânea numa afterparty no final de semana passado no México e ele funcionou perfeitamente, o que me fez muito feliz.
O que se comenta é que o M.A.N.D.Y. vai voltar maior, melhor e mais forte em 2010. Vocês pode compartilhar alguns detalhes a respeito?
Estamos mudando todo o nosso setup. Chamando pessoas talentosas a bordo que nos auxiliem a fazer apresentações melhores, no âmbito organizacional, sonoro e com um novo conceito visual também. E, claro, temos que lançar mais músicas. Não é como se não tivéssemos lançado nada no passado, mas não estamos satisfeitos com o resultado. Então, isso significa sem dúvida mais tempo no estúdio.
Vocês acham que sua música e seu desenvolvimento serão afetados pelo fato de que agora vocês moram em países diferentes?
Talvez um pouco, é sempre bom para a inspiração viver numa cidade diferente, conhecer novas pessoas, ver novas coisas. Você acaba tendo mais assuntos para conversar e pode traduzir toda essa nova informação em forma musical. Estou muito empolgado com a mudança e com o que futuro reserva…
Creio que o espaço do M.A.N.D.Y. sempre foi um das mais estabelecidos no quartel-general da Get Physical. Agora com um de vocês longe, você terá de trancar a porta para impedir que novatos o ocupem?
Sempre foi um conceito aberto e mais ainda agora que estamos fazendo apresentações ao vivo. O estúdio era desmontado com certa frequência. E gostamos quando o equipamento é utilizado, para que permaneça treinado e não perca a alma.
Tendo duas reputadas coletênas mixadas (Get Physical 7th Anniversary e The Mix Collection para a Renaissance) lançadas neste ano, vocês acharam difícil criar dois conceitos distintos para cada? Como abordaram o desafio?
Desta vez foi fácil, já que a compilação da Get Physical estava claramente definida. Mas foi complexo do mesmo modo. 240 faixas, consistindo em algumas pacrialmente inéditas e edits especiais, dentre as quais tivemos de escolher. Porém, é claro que exclusivamente material da Get Physical.
E, quanto à coletânea da Renaissance, ela foi abordada do mesmo modo que as nossas “At The Controls”. Quisemos fazer uma para dançar em casa e a outra como um Club Mix tradicional, mas com a idéia de que pudessem ser ouvidas daqui a alguns anos. Estamos muito felizes. Mesmo já tendo escutado ambas umas 1001 vezes, ainda gosto bastante delas.
Há alguma meta para o M.AN.D.Y. que ainda não tenha sido atingida ou ultrapassada?
São muitas para enumerar… mas é justamente isso que nos mantêm no jogo e solidifica nossa amizade. Para mantermo-nos como melhores amigos, tocar um negócio juntos, trabalhar em conjunto de forma tão próxima e ainda nos respeitarmos mutuamente será sempre nosso principal objetivo e nos empenhamos nisso…
E quando poderemos vê-los no Brasil da próxima vez?
Regularmente. Nosso agente brasileiro faz um excelente trabalho e consegue nos trazer para o seu belo país com bastante frequência. Fique atento às datas em nossos sites.

Complete Interview
So 2009, where did it go? Can you tell us any highlights for you both, and for M.A.N.D.Y. this year?
It went pretty much in all directions. Very eventful and exciting year. Difficult too sometimes as the music industry suffers so much and its hard to maintain the label, but we are positive as always that we will survive these troubled times. Patrick and I have toured the globe ten times back and forth and we are still enjoying it. And we always meet new interesting people that make our job worthwile doing it.
But due to the crisis it was a rougher year as well for us, DJs. Less money in the whole game, but it makes you reflect once again, so I think it was a very important year for a lot of people.
How and when was this mix recorded?
The mix was recorded at Watergate, during our 7th Anniversary Compilation Record Release party in Berlin in September. At that time, we were just finishing the whole promo & the whole project for that compilation and we were working on another compilation… another project that took a lot of energy from us but at the end, we were all happy, even though we were nearly completely empty after a period like this. But this night at Watergate was another fun nights as we always have in Watergate.
Obviously you play out a lot. Was there anything specific about this mix that makes it any more special than the rest?
As we put so much effort into the mix, we are pretty confident that our dj mixes are different than a lot out there. We question every track on it for quite some time and only the ones make it that have a longlasting effect and don’t get boring easily. All the energy goes into the mix, so yes I think our mixes (dj mixes or mixes for comps) are very special. I played one of the mixes we did for a compilation on an afterparty last weekend in Mexico and it worked very just perfect which made me a very happy man.
The word on the street is that M.A.N.D.Y. are coming out bigger, faster and stronger in 2010. Can you give us any details?
We are changing our whole set up. Getting some talented people on board that help us to do better shows, organisation wise, sound and with a visual concept too. And of course we have to release music again. It’s not that we didn’t do anything in the past, but we were not happy enough with the result. So mos def more time in the studio.
Do you think that your music and progression will be affected by the fact that you are now living in separate countries?
Maybe a little. It’s always good for inspiration if you live in a new city, meet new people, see new things. You have more things to talk about and can translate all this new info into your music. Pretty excited about the move and what future holds…
I guess the M.A.N.D.Y. studio has been one of the more established rooms at Get Physical HQ. Now with one of you away, will you have to put a lock on the door to stop the new kids moving in?
It’s was always a open concept and now that we are doing the live shows. The studio is torn apart pretty often. And we like it when the machines get used, so they stay trained and they don’t loose the soul.
Having had two high profile mix compilations (Get Physical 7th Anniversary & Renaissance’s The Mix Collection) being released this year, did you find it difficult to create two different concepts for each? How did you approach it?
This time it was easy as the get physical comp was cleary defined. But it was still difficult. 240 tracks, partly unreleased and special edits, that we had to choose from. But of course only Get Physical material.
And the Renaissance compilation was approached in the same way as our at the controls. We wanted to do one for homeraving and the other one as a current club mix, but with the idea you could listen to it in a couples of years time. We are pretty happy. Even though we heard it now 1001 times, I still like it.
Is there a goal for M.A.N.D.Y. that you haven’t reached or surpassed yet?
Too many to mention… but that what keeps us in the game and our friendship going. To stay best friends, run a business together, work together so closely and still respect each other will always be the biggest goal and we work hard on it…
And when can we catch you in Brazil next?
Regularly. Our Brazilian agent is doing an excellent job and makes us come to your beautiful country very regularly. Watch out for the dates at our sites.
